Good debt vs bad debt — does that distinction exist in Islam?

This popular framing needs an Islamic correction, because it quietly smuggles in an assumption we cannot accept. Let me redraw the line where it actually belongs.

The short answer: The conventional "good debt vs bad debt" idea mostly sorts loans by whether they buy something productive — but it assumes interest-based borrowing is fine, which Islam rejects. Our distinction is sharper and simpler: the dividing line is riba. Interest-bearing debt is the harmful kind, full stop; debt without riba is a different conversation.

Conventional advice calls a mortgage or a business loan "good debt" (it buys an appreciating or income-producing asset) and credit-card balances "bad debt" (wasteful consumption). There is a grain of practical sense in productive-versus-wasteful — but the framing treats the interest itself as neutral, which it is not. For us, the first and decisive question is not what the debt bought; it is whether it carries riba. An interest-bearing loan does not become "good" because it funded something useful; the riba is harmful regardless.

Where we stand: so we redraw the line. Riba-bearing debt is the harmful category, to be avoided and escaped — productive or not. Riba-free debt (an interest-free loan, a sound halal-finance arrangement, a debt to family) is permissible, and there the old productive-versus-wasteful wisdom is useful: borrow cleanly for what genuinely builds, not for impulse and ego.

The deen's caution around debt — even permissible debt — is a mercy. The Prophet ﷺ regularly sought refuge from the burden of debt, knowing how it weighs on a person. Stay light: free of riba entirely, and free of even halal debt you do not truly need.
