What is an investor profile?

By Mehdi, Senior Sukuk Fund Manager · Updated May 2026

Most people start with "what should I buy?" That is the wrong first question. The right one is "who am I as an investor?" — and that is your profile.

The short answer: An investor profile is the honest picture of who you actually are as an investor — your timeline, your responsibilities, your capacity for loss, and your temperament. It is the thing that should decide your portfolio, long before any product or hot tip enters the conversation.

Your profile is the sum of a few honest answers: How long until you need this money (your time horizon)? How much loss could you genuinely absorb without it harming your life (your capacity)? How much volatility can you stomach without panicking (your tolerance)? What are your real responsibilities and goals? Two people with identical incomes can have completely different right portfolios because their answers differ — a young single earner and a sole provider nearing retirement should not invest the same way, even with the same salary.

Where we stand: this is foundational to everything we do, which is why the very first Foundation tool is the Investor Profile — it establishes your identity as an investor before anything else. Get this right and the product questions answer themselves; skip it and you will end up in someone else's portfolio, not your own.

Knowing yourself honestly — your real capacity, your true responsibilities, your temperament — is a kind of wisdom, and the deen prizes self-knowledge. Investing from who you actually are, rather than who the crowd is, is both better stewardship and more honest before Allah.
